We had a great week of tours with lots of sunshine and killer whales! We saw orcas on ALL seven of our tours this week.
This week we had visits from the T65B, T090, T124A, and T124D families of killer whales. We also encountered the legendary pair of orcas T063 and T065, “Chainsaw” and “Whidbey” on a couple of different tours.
We had a lot of amazing encounters with orcas this week. But perhaps my favorite came on Sunday’s full day tour when we encountered the T065B family of orcas in Boundary Pass. After a short while of watching them travel at a ginger pace down Boundary pass, they made their way into a rocky outcropping called “Bare Island,” where we could see there was a ton of harbor seals hauled out on the rocks and all around. We watched as T65B2 and T65B3 went WAY up into some tiny little cracks in the rocks looking for seals. And indeed it did not take them long to find one as we started to see a lot of thrashing and white water. After this mom, T65B “Chunk” and T65B1 “Birdsall” came in, to get in on the action. They quickly had dispatched at least one harbor seal from what we could see, possibly more. We watched as they began prey sharing, having a nice mid morning meal. It was a pretty intense sight to see!
That will do it for our April tours. We had a great month of April, seeing whales on all of our tours, and orcas on 17 of our 24 tours. May is sure to be a great month of tours in the San Juan Islands, there will be more and more humpback whales that start to show up, and of course our Bigg’s killer whales will be here as well! Don’t miss your chance for an adventure!
